Color
The importance of Color is high because it is something recognized by the "naked" eye. Although Colorless Diamonds remain the most popular today and receive the highest grading, Diamonds with a hint of Color can also meet Color expectations and receive high grading. GIA has developed a scale of official grades from D-Z. D represents a Colorless Diamond while Z represents a Fancy Yellow hued Diamond. And while many Diamonds may appear to be Colorless, they usually have a hint of Color. This is why 3 other factors come into play when selecting a high quality Diamond.
Clarity
Much like color, but less noticeable to the "naked" eye, is the Clarity of a Diamond, which simply represents the amount of inclusions and blemishes. The less inclusions and blemishes on the Diamond, the higher the Clarity. Inclusions are found within a Diamond, while blemishes are confined to the surface of a Diamond. Inclusions and blemishes hinder the flow of light, which is reflected and refracted once it enters a Diamond. Some of this light may be lost due to the presence of an inclusion, preventing a Diamond from showcasing its true brilliance.
Carat
The measurement used to determine the weight of a Diamond is Carat. To be clear, Carat measures only the weight of a Diamond, not its size. One full Carat consists of 100 points. Carat is usually the simplest of the 4 C's to determine due to the equipment and tools used by Gemologists.
Cut
Cut is the most important of the 4 C's, due to the human component involved. Cut is unique from Color, Clarity and Carat because those features are determined by nature and simply measured by man. Allowing ideal light flow to move through the Diamond involves the expertise of the Diamond cutter to reveal the true inner beauty of a Diamond.
